Monday Map: Cowgirl Country

This is a map I did about 5 years ago for a book called Holding the Reins: A Ride Through Cowgirl Life, by Marc Talbert and Barbara Van Cleve. (Apologies for the grainy scan!) Sadly, the book appears to be out of print, but it was an interesting story about four different girls growing up and working on ranches in Utah and Colorado, Montana, Wyoming and New Mexico.

Lately I've been reading more and more books thinking-- I wish there was a map in the frontispiece. Flipping back and forth between a story and a map, imagining where a character is when I'm reading-- makes me slow down and savor the story even more.

My thoughts exactly. I LOVE a good map in a book. As a kid, I used to make maps of the fields around my house so I could document our adventures. Have you read Leepike Ridge? I thought it would've been a perfect candidate for a map---it's a retelling of the Odyssey.

Sara- I haven't read that-- I'll have to look for it. I love that you used to make maps as a kid! Brings back fond memories of all sorts of backyard adventures...

What about maps for classic books like War and Peace and Middlemarch.
They would be wonderful.........and quite helpful to the reader.

Good point about the map, it's like good wine at a meal, the food tastes better. Or maybe that's a silly analogy. Wonderful map.
